Early Life and Career
John Langdon Down (1828-1896) was born in Torpoint, Cornwall, to an Irish pharmacist father.
After working with his father for 18 years, he moved to London to pursue a career in medicine. He became an assistant surgeon, studied pharmacy, and assisted renowned chemist Michael Faraday.

In 1853, Down enrolled at the London Hospital Medical College, where he excelled and won a gold medal upon graduation.
