Assia Djebar (born Fatima-Zohra Imalhayen) is an Algerian writer and filmmaker.
The author of numerous novels, collections of poetry, plays, short stories, and essays and director of two critically acclaimed films, she is one of the most important literary and cultural figures of the Arab and Francophone worlds.
For over half a century, she has been a vocal advocate of the emancipation and advancement of women in Arab Muslim societies. She is also a pioneer for a better appreciation of the culture and history of Islam and a promoter of the dialogue between the Arab world and the West.
